The Newark Airport is separated from Manhattan by a vast flat expanse of marshes, so I had a perfect view of the distant skyline across the tarmac as I waited for my flight. In the foreground was an enormous herd of towering cranes feeding on the container ships arriving from across all of the oceans of the world.
