On my second day in Budapest last July I learned that a district downtown here was evacuated the previous day because of a WWII bomb. The live 500-kilogram bomb was discovered during an excavation. The next day I read about another one having been discovered elsewhere in Hungary. Since then other stories about other bombs found during construction have continued to pop up. From my count there have been five more stories since July, including the one in yesterday's news, about an area around the Margaret Bridge being evacuated while a bomb was lifted from the Danube. Often story includes some version of an account from a neighbor having lived above a buried bomb for years without realizing it.
It makes me curious about how common this sort of thing is elsewhere in Europe...

Strangely was talking about this to my aunt yesterday. I haven't heard of any recent events but 30 years ago when my cousin was aged about 12 he & a friend found a shell on a local beach. They carried it about two miles to the local police station where they announced "We've got a bomb!" You can imagine the reaction as the police station rapidly emptied! It turned out it was live so they were very lucky.

That sounds like a movie! And thanks for sharing.
This old bomb phenomenon is definitely new to me.
I think that since North America has been spared war on its soil for so long, for a lot of people (I'm guilty) it doesn't often feel as real as it should. Little reminders like a live bomb found by kids on a beach would certainly tend to remove the fiction effect caused by only ever seeing it on TV!
